We met with Alex Young, the Community Manager of The Projects Brighton for a very interesting talk about the industry and more. Alex has been coworking industry for a year!
How long have you been in the industry?
Alex: "Just a year!"
What motivates you to get up and continue what you do today?
Alex: "My motivation is to make people's lives better, every single day. Here at The Projects, it's not just about providing people with a space to work from (which is often what people think is at the crooks of a coworking space). We want to make a dramatic difference to both their productivity and their positivity.
We've designed a variety of spaces which our members and visitors can use from large hot desking areas to our cafe, meeting rooms to our bar, our roof terrace to our games room. Each of these enable people to move around the building and find the perfect space for whatever it is they're working on but also give them a place to relax, to make connections and have a break.
Encouraging a healthy work:life balance is key for us and our 5 star Google reviews are hinting we're doing a good job so far!"
What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
Alex: "Our aim is to be the friendliest members' club in the world. We want everyone who walks through the door to feel at home here and know that our team will support them however we can with whatever they need support with."
Where are you today in life/business and where you want to be?
Alex: "We've reached capacity in our coworking spaces, dedicated desks and private offices so it's been a hugely successful first year. Now on to looking at new spaces and, of course, always improving on our offerings."
What seems to be the business problem or challenges that you have today? what keeps you awake at night?
Alex: "Nothing keeps me awake at night, I feel so confident and happy about what we're doing at The Projects. Our next challenge (expansion) is exciting and of course, there are always bumps in the road and things that come up that need to be worked around but we've done it all once and we'll do it again but with lived experience and a hugely supportive group of members behind us!"
How did you pick your brand name?
Alex: "Our name was influenced by the American housing projects which saw so many difficulties but equally, an amazing sense of community and collaboration. Despite all of the challenges people faced there, so many outstanding people grew up there and went on to change the world that we live in. Our 7 private offices are all named after people who grew up in the housing projects.
Of course, the name fits for freelances, start-ups, SMEs and more established businesses, too, as we're all working on projects of varying sizes and complexities each day here at The Projects."
How do your members find you today?
Alex: "We get people finding us from all over, really. The 2 most common ways are word of mouth (we have lots of lovely people who rave about us to their friends both in person and online) and Instagram - we have a growing following and often people visit because they've seen our posts and want to have a look round for themselves."
